Who Got You Here Won't Get You There

We've all heard the saying: "What got you here won't get you there."
But what if the real challenge isn't about changing what you do—it's about recognizing that who got you here won't get you there either?
As a founder, you've built something remarkable. You've surrounded yourself with people who believed in the vision, hustled through the early days, and helped you get from zero to one.
But here's the hard truth: the team that got you to $1M isn't always the team that will get you to $10M.
It's not about loyalty. It's not about effort. It's about evolution.

The Reality of Growth
The people who thrived in startup mode—scrappy generalists who could do a little bit of everything—may struggle when you need specialists. When processes replace improvisation. When "figure it out" becomes "execute the strategy."
And that's okay. It doesn't mean they failed. It means the business evolved faster than the role did.
Growth demands different capabilities. The skills that helped you survive the early days aren't necessarily the ones that will help you thrive at scale.
Making the Shift
The shift from who to what you need next is one of the hardest leadership decisions you'll make. But it's also one of the most important.
Ask yourself:
Do I have the right people in the right seats for where we're going—not where we've been?
Am I holding onto people out of loyalty rather than performance?
What skills and leadership do we need for the next stage of growth?
Sometimes the answer is upskilling your current team. Sometimes it's bringing in new expertise. And sometimes, it's making the tough call to move on.
Building for What's Next
The companies that scale successfully don't just evolve their products—they evolve their teams. They recognize that growth requires different capabilities at different stages.
If you're feeling stuck, ask yourself: Is it the strategy that's wrong, or is it the team executing it?
Because what got you here won't get you there. And neither will who got you here—unless they're willing and able to evolve with you.
What's your experience with this? Have you had to make tough decisions about your team as you've scaled?
